Problem/Challenge
The platforms’ installation point were a distance away from the loading point, therefore buggies would have had to be used to transfer the platforms. However, this would prove troublesome as it would have been relatively difficult to move lifting equipment into this area.
Solution
Due to these access issues, the contractor was endeavouring to find a light weight alternative to steel. In view of the fact that Relinea’s GRP platforms were approximately 70% lighter than steel, and that they could be split down into manageable sections to eliminate the need for heavy lifting gear meant that GRP was the superior alternative for the platforms.
The platform sections were easily handballed off the transport trailer without the need for heavy lifting gear. The sections were loaded onto buggies and transferred to track to the offloading point. The sections were again handballed into position without the need for heavy lifting equipment. Slip resistant RE-GRID Grating was then added after the platforms were installed.
Alterations due to site conditions could be made easily on site without the costly need for employing a steel fabricator, and eliminating the risk of damaging the corrosion resistance of the material.
The contractor we working with estimated that they reduced their installation cost by 50% as a result of using GRP.
In conclusion, the contractor received competitively priced platforms that were easily installed, and furthermore the end client Metrolink received platforms with a design life of 50 years, and that offer exceptional anti-slip properties for worker health and safety.
