Leixlip Sewage Treatment Works

At a Glance

The Leixlip Plant is the second largest water treatment plant in Ireland and supplies approximately 30 per cent of the Dublin Region’s drinking water requirements, supplying North Dublin City and County as well as parts of South County Dublin and Kildare.Fingal County Council recognised that additional capacity at the Leixlip Plant was required to meet the current water demand of the catchment area, whilst providing further space for future development needs.SIAC Construction was the main contractor for the expansion scheme of the new stand-alone €30 million water treatment plant. Relinea were awarded the sub-contract to design, fabricate and install GRP pedestrian access equipment and GRP bespoke moulded cabinets and enclosures throughout the general areas of the water treatment plant.

Problem/Challenge

Stainless steel was originally specified for the pedestrian access equipment within the water treatment plant however this material was proving very costly for the site expansion.

Another challenging factor within the scope of this project was the restricted space within the Sodium Hypochlorite Tank room. This was a major concern from an installation point of view as fitting of the heavy weight stainless steel tank platforms could prove relatively dangerous for the installation team.

Solution

Relinea were appointed to design, fabricate and install glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pedestrian access equipment within the water treatment plant as a cost effective alternative to stainless steel, whilst meeting the high aesthetic standards required for the plant expansion. The mechanical and electrical contractor calculated that by using GRP instead of stainless steel, they saved 30% on cost.

Relinea provided a full design service with structural calculations and drawings for the new water treatment works, in particular providing access solutions to areas that were not part of the original design such as the Sodium Hypochlorite Tank Room. The lightweight properties of GRP meant that the high level tank access platforms were easy to handle and install quickly and efficiently without the requirement of heavy lifting equipment.

Relinea were further asked to supply bespoke GRP moulded Chemical Spill Containment Cabinets and Kiosks (to enclose electrical equipment) made specifically to the client’s requirements.

The GRP Access Hatches were manufactured to pedestrian rating and incorporated solo lift gas assisted lids, intended for single person use. The Access Hatches were lockable with master key, included integral fall arrest, and were fully water tight.

Relinea delivered the project on time, on budget and to a very high standard to the complete satisfaction of the client.
