South Dublin County Council had recently built a new pedestrian bridge over the Grand Canal in Adamstown. Perforated Steel grating had been installed on the bridge however shortly after opening, South Dublin County Council began to receive complaints from the public regarding the slipperiness of the bridge when wet. This was a particular problem in at the corners where cyclists had reported that the steel grating became very slippery in wet conditions.

Problem/Challenge

Due to the severe health and safety risk of the pedestrian bridge, South Dublin County Council were faced with the issue of how to manage the slip resistance of the bridge to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Solution

Relinea proposed the use of GRP covered gritted grating (RE-DECK) that could replace the perforated steel grating at the corners of the footpath for a high slip resistant finish. The GRP grating depth encompassed the same depth as the steel perforated plate that was currently installed, allowing for simple installation. The client had concerns regarding the use of GRP as this area was prone to vandalism. Hence, they were concerned about how the RE-DECK covered grating would perform. We explained to the client how our GRP covered grating not only performs exceptionally well under impact, it is also fire retardant, and possesses zero theft value.

Relinea were specified to change out the grating on the project, and were further contracted to supply and install the GRP covered grating.

What is more the client wanted to limit the impact of fixings on the bridge, therefore we proposed the use of a smaller alternative to our W clip which the client approved.

The installation had to be completed during strict hours to allow for pedestrian access. The project was carried out smoothly and within the specified time frame.

To conclude, the client has not received any further claims of accidents on the footbridge, and is very satisfied with how the RE-DECK covered grating has performed. They have subsequently specified the use of our GRP grating on a new project they are working on.
