What is the difference between GRP Decking, GRP Open Mesh Decking and GRP Grating?

GRP Decking and Open Mesh Decking are both composite materials made from a mixture of fiberglass and resin, offering corrosion resistance, durability, and lightweight properties. However, they differ in structure, application, and characteristics. Here’s a breakdown of their differences:

  1. GRP Decking and Grating Structure and Design

GRP Decking: GRP decking (also known as solid top grating) consists of solid panels or planks designed to create a flat, solid surface. It is primarily used in situations where a smooth walking surface is needed. The surface of GRP decking is often textured to provide slip resistance.

Relinea’s Re-Deck Solid Top Grating is a square mesh structure with 3mm thick integrally bonded plate cover. This moulded one-piece GRP fibreglass grating flooring product combines our GRP Re-Plate with our Re-Grid Open Mesh Grating.

GRP Grating/ Open Mesh Decking: GRP Open Mesh Decking is the exact same as GRP Grating. Often referred to as “open mesh decking”, GRP grating is a mesh or grid-like structure with open spaces. The grid design allows fluids, air, and debris to pass through. This is useful in environments where drainage is necessary.

Relinea’s Re-Grid: GRP Open Mesh Grating is a high strength square mesh structure with bi-directional strength.

  1. Applications

GRP Decking: Primarily used for areas where people will be walking, such as walkways, platforms, bridges, balconies, or in places where a solid, smooth, and anti-slip surface is required. It is ideal for environments like industrial plants, rooftops, and pedestrian walkways.

GRP Grating/ Open Mesh Decking: Used in environments where airflow, drainage, or ventilation is important. Common applications include catwalks, stair treads, trench covers, flooring in factories, or any setting where liquids or debris need to be able to pass through the surface.

  1. Appearance

GRP Decking: Appears more solid and flat, often resembling traditional decking materials like wood or metal but with a fibrous texture.

GRP Grating/ Open Mesh Decking: Has an open, mesh-like appearance with visible grid pattern.

  1. Drainage and Ventilation

GRP Decking: Provides little to no drainage or ventilation due to its solid nature, which makes it suitable for situations where a closed surface is required.

GRP Grating/ Open Mesh Decking: The open structure of grating allows for excellent drainage, making it ideal for use in environments exposed to liquids or where debris needs to be cleared.

Summary:

GRP Decking: Solid, flat surface used for walkways and platforms where a smooth, slip-resistant surface is required.

GRP Grating/ Open Mesh Decking: Mesh/grid structure used in industrial environments where drainage is needed and the risk of small items falling through is not a problem.

Both are durable and corrosion-resistant, but their design and applications differ based on the need for a solid surface (decking) versus an open, gridded structure (grating).
